Bunús - Fréamhaithe sa phobal

Is é an pobal a thiomáin bunú Ghaelcholáiste Dhoire, a d'oscail in 2015. Tá an Gaelcholáiste lonnaithe i suíomh oidhreachta tábhachtach, Caisleán Dhún Geimhin. Creidtear go raibh dún ag na Cathánaigh ar an láthair agus gur baineadh den taoiseach áitiúil, Domhnall Ballach Ó Catháin, é in aimsir Phlandáil Uladh. Thóg an Captaen Carey foirgneamh ann i 1680, agus rinne teaghlach Ogilvy tuilleadh forbartha air sna 1830í gur fhág i riocht Chaisleán an lae inniu é. I dtús an 20ú haois cheannaigh teaghlach áitiúil de Mhuintir Mhig Bhloscaidh é agus i rith an 20ú haois bhí tithíocht ag muintir na háite ann, bhí sé ina halla damhsa, bhí sé ina bhunáit ag arm Mheiriceá i rith an Dara Cogadh Domhanda agus ina láthair do chruinnithe poiblí le linn na dTrioblóidí. Fuair eagraíocht phobail áitiúil an léas ar an Chaisleán i 1989 agus rinneadh cuid mhór athchóirithe air. Rinne an Roinn Oideachais nuachóiriú ar an fhoirgneamh i samhradh 2015 le riachtanais theicniúla scoile den 21ú haois a chomhlíonadh.

Bhunaigh pobal chontae Dhoire an Gaelcholáiste le riar ar an éileamh bisiúil ar Ghaeloideachas ardchaighdeáin ag an leibhéal iar-bhunscoile sa scoilcheantar. Tá daltaí ar an Ghaelcholáiste ó áiteanna chomh fada ar shiúl le Dún Lathaí agus Port Chluain Eoghain i gcontae Aontroma agus tá socruithe taistil den chéadscoth déanta ag an Údarás Oideachais do dhaltaí an Ghaelcholáiste.

Tá an Gaelcholáiste bunaithe ar shamhail rathúil atá á leanúint ag os cionn 50 Gaelcholáiste ar fud na tíre. Tá na Gaelcholáistí ar na scoileanna is airde gnóthachtáil sa tír agus bíonn a gcuid daltaí ag triall ar na cúrsaí ollscoile ag an leibhéal is airde. Cuirtear rath na nGaelcholáistí síos don eitic láidir oibre agus fosta don mhothú pobail a bhíonn iontu. Bíonn dearcadh dearfach ag a ndaltaí ar an fhoghlaim agus bíonn siad iontach bródúil as a scoil. Is eol fosta go gcuireann an suíomh dátheangach le cumas cognaíoch na ndaltaí - léiríonn an taighde go spreagtar réimsí ar leith den inchinn agus na scileanna smaointeoireachta nuair a bhítear ag foghlaim ábhar trí theanga nach í an teanga dhúchais í.

Is suíomh foghlama speisialta agus spreagúil é Caisleán Dhún Geimhin, atá ag amharc amach ar na Speiríní, an Bhinn Bhradach agus Binn Fhoibhne. Spreagann oidhreacht agus áilleacht na scoile mórtas nach beag i ndaltaí an Ghaelcholáiste.

Origins – Rooted in community
The establishment of Gaelcholáiste Dhoire was community led and was founded in 2015. The Gaelcholáiste is located in the landmark heritage site of Dungiven Castle. It is believed that there was an Ó Catháin holding on the site which was confiscated from the local Chieftain, Donal Ballagh Ó Catháin, at the time of the Plantation and a structure was built by Captain Carey in 1680 which was further developed by the Ogilby family in the 1830’s into the Castle that stands today. In the early 1900’s the Castle was purchased by a local McCloskey family and through the 20th Century, it accommodated housing for local families, a dance hall, a base for the U.S. army in the World War II and a venue for public meetings during the Troubles. The lease of the Castle was acquired by a local community organisation in 1989 and was extensively renovated and refurbished. The building has been updated and modernised by the Department of Education in the summer of 2015 to meet all the technical requirements of a 21st Century school.

Gaelcholáiste Dhoire was established by the community to meet the increasing demand for quality Irish-medium education at post-primary level in the catchment area. The Gaelcholáiste has pupils travelling from as far afield as Dunloy and Portglenone in County Antrim and excellent transport arrangements are facilitated by the Education Authority for the pupils of Gaelcholáiste Dhoire.

The Gaelcholáiste is based on a highly successful model that has been implemented by over fifty Gaelcholáistí the length and breadth of Ireland. Gaelcholáistí are amongst the top-performing schools and pupils access the highest level University courses. The success of Gaelcholáistí is attributed to the strong work ethic and also to the sense of community in these schools. Students in Gaelcholáistí tend to have a very positive attitude to learning and a great pride in their school. It is also a fact that bilingual conditions increase cognitive ability among students. Research has proven that the challenge of learning subjects through a language other than your native language develops areas of the brain and thinking skills.

Dungiven Castle is an inspiring and unique learning environment. The Castle boasts views over the Sperrin mountains, Benbradagh and Binevenagh. The heritage and beauty of the school instils a deep sense of pride in the pupils of Gaelcholáiste Dhoire.
